Reg & Sue
Owners of Vélo Le Closier
You may be interested in who we are, how we came to live and operate Vélo Le Closier, and a little about the house.
Sue worked in the NHS as a dietitian and I, Reg, worked in the legal profession. We are regular people who having been on numerous cycling holidays dreamed of running a specialist cycling B&B. No doubt something you have thought about too. Triathlon was Sue’s interest. She raced twice for GB in the World Championships as an age group vet in Madeira 2004 and in London in 2013. I simply enjoyed cycling and rode almost exclusively with a group in Solihull.
On a number of occasions, we had spoken about giving it all up and following our heart, but it all seemed like a pipe dream. One night we decided that we would pursue our dream, sold our house and gave up our jobs. Location is key and having studied the Pyrénées section of Simon Warren’s 100 Greatest Cycling Climbs of the Tour de France we knew where we needed to be located. We just had to find a property that met our requirements.
After many months of searching we found our dream house which met all of our requirements and exceeded most. The original part of the house dates back to 1643 and has been extended over the preceding 370 years. The previous owner bought the house and carried out a total restoration which took about 8 years. The main house totals over 600 mtr2 of space and lends itself perfectly to accommodating groups of up to 14. We live in an apartment attached to the main house.
We are located in the village of La Barthe de Neste which is situated in the foothills of the Pyrénées. This means that directly from the house there are many route options from the icon Tour de France climbs to easier rolling hills. It also means that generally the ride home is downhill, which at the end of a long day is very welcome on tired legs.
Sue prepares all meals in the Le Closier kitchen using local produce as well as home grown fruit and veg. Homemade cakes welcome you on your return after a long ride and Sue’s homemade ice creams are becoming legendry. Nothing gives us greater pleasure than taking people cycling in the Pyrénées and hosting them at our wonderful house. We look forward to welcoming you at Vélo Le Closier.
