Cycle Routes

Genos and Col de Val Louron-Azet.

  • Distance 81 km – 50 miles
  • Total Ascent 1,287 mtrs – 4,182ft
  • Main climb 7.5km – 4.6 miles
  • Height Gain – 620 mtrs – 2,015 ft
  • Altitude 1580 mtrs – 5,135ft
  • Average 8.5% (Allegedly)
This ride is from the house heading south down the valley to the pretty village of Arreau where you head off towards the Peyresourde and the Louron valley and then to the gorgeous village of Genos. Depending on the time of year there is a café at Lac Genos which is worth
a stop and coffee before starting the climb to the Col de Val Louron-Azet.

As stated by Simon Warren in his book the 100 Greatest cycling climbs of the Tour de France, "see if you can find somewhere safe to leave your brain – you’ll not want it bothering you as you battle up this evil ascent".

The climb is an HC category it is 7.5 km and allegedly 8.5% average but the first few kilometres are much steeper despite what the sign post says. To put this climb into perspective it is 2.5km less distance than Sa Colabra in Mallorca but only 48mtrs less in height gain. My Garmin didn’t seem to move from 10-11% for the first half of the climb and the 15 hairpins make for targets to motivate you up this tough little climb. Once at the top the views over both the valley Louron and Aure Valley are stunning. The runway on top of the Peyragudes which will host the 2017 stage 12 mountain top finish can be seen across the Louron Valley.

You now head down the west side of the Col towards Azet taking in some fabulous views across to Pla d’Adet and the Aure Valley. The route drops you back into Arreau and along the river Neste and valley road back to Le Closier.
